This game is exactly what it was advertised, which is the big reason I recommend it. The devs prioritized the gameplay over the story and it shows, but I am not really playing for the story (I play a lot of grand strategy games, but got this to just relax and have fun). I mostly came for the fluid gunplay that is on par with Doom, the car mechanics of Mad Max but a bit more refined, and the colorful atmosphere that wasn't just going to be *insert generic post-apocalypse color palette here* that every other game does. I have gotten exactly that and I love it even if some of the story is cringe inducing, because at the very least some of the characters are more memorable than Rage 1 and the devs really just wanted to have fun with the game instead of trying to make it unbearably serious and full of itself. The devs have publicly stated a few times that the game is supposed to be more open world than story driven, so anyone who bought it thinking it was going to be some sort of epic, I'm not sure what advertising you were watching.I haven't experienced any of the fatal crashes or frame rate drops people seem to be getting even though my computer is a few years old and runs most new games at low graphics (I've had consistent frame rate on medium graphic settings). However, I have had a few bugs with desynced audio or dialogue simply not being said and at one time my wingstick was invisible. Also the majority of negative reviews aren't even relevant/accurate towards the game itself, it's just people complaining about microtransactions (which there aren't any, and in game cosmetics you can get in game that are offered as separate purchases as well are hardly something to complain about), needing a FREE Bethesda account to redeem your pre-order bonuses (they've made you do this for every Bethesda title since Fallout 4, this is hardly a crime), and Denuvo being added to the game (it's most likely going to get phased out once the game gets pirated so buy the game then if it's that much of an issue for you) *As you can see Denuvo was removed within a day, guess a lot of people have no reason to complain now*. Is it worth the asking price? Compared to just about anything else currently being released by AAA devs in the West, it's more worth it than they are and I've felt that I've had my money's worth 10+ hours in. The game came completed and hasn't required a few dozen GBs of patches on day 1, the devs haven't "withheld" any gameplay from the players and I personally liked that the pre-order "DLC" are items you need to complete a mission for just to receive instead of starting the game with them. The game isn't behind some sort of exclusivity launcher and is here on Steam. There's a lot of stuff done right and considering that majority of games are either dull and safe, or being released half finished at full price, people should give credit to id and Avalanche for this instead of ♥♥♥♥♥ing about being able to buy a gun skin that you can still obtain in game without paying extra money for.. My two cents on this game mainly points at the adventure of this game, or lack-of. When it comes to combat, yeah the combat is good, fun, dashing around blowing up goons just like I did in Borderlands, traversing across a fairly large map in different vehicles has it's perks - even though a lot of the map you'll never go to because there's simply nothing there.. but anyway - If you're looking for a similar experience to Skyrim or Fallout and even FarCry where you have a massive map to work with, many quests / missions/ jobs to do even after you finish the story, then look somewhere else. If you commit to the story of this game you'll have it done in about 12 hours, give or take depending on difficulty / commitment. After that you won't feel a commitment to this game, even when you drop as much money as you did (which is quite sad I think). As for non-story jobs - you'll get excited for maybe an hour or two in the 'Finish all these challenges' mentality, but soon realise that it's extremely repetitive and and in the end, bloody tedious. I might be more inclined not to give it a bad review if it was priced closer to £30. £20 would be a snatch. However I do feel like I was cheated given the price of this game and the experience I had. Definitely get it on sale if you're going to: How much would you spend for 10 hours of your time?. Would not recommend this game for $60. Took me about 10 hours to complete the main story which seemed like it consisted of only 8 quests or so. My playtime is where it's at because I left it on overnight. There's still a lot of SIDE stuff to do but it's all tedious and boring. Map is pretty small and empty. Copy/paste buildings and no inside areas to explore besides story quest areas. Never died playing through it on Hard difficulty either. I just can't tell someone this is worth it at the current price.. Fun Game so far but Do Not Buy Bethesda withheld the information that the game uses Denuvo Anti-Tamper until 24 hours before release. Bethesda also withheld the information that both the pre-order content and Deluxe Edition content require a 3rd-party Bethesda.net account until 24 hours before release on the game's Steam page. Because the main game can be played without a Bethesda account but the DLC content cannot, this in effect holds paid for content hostage until you create a Bethesda.net account. Bethesda's own website does not mention the need for a Bethesda account on their own support page on System requirements (as of 1:40 AM Central Time May 14th 2019, 3.7 hours after release. Withholding this information which would have impacted pre-order sales until right before release should be considered a form of fraud/false advertising. Both measures would have taken more than a day to add to the game's code and Bethesda would have known about it for a substantial amount of time before release. The only reason to have withheld this info would be to prevent the inclusion of these requirements from affecting pre-orders. This is greedy and unethical corporate behavior. TLDR: Good Game but Bethesda withheld critical game info until 24 hours before release in order to gain more pre-orders and are now holding extra content hostage until you create a Bethesda account Addendum: As a response to comments, let me clarify: A: The ease of creating a Bethesda account or the need to do so, as well as the inclusion of 3rd party DRM are not the issue that I am raising. It is the fact that the need create an account and the inclusion of additional DRM was hidden until 24 hours prior to release. The only logical reason to for the Publisher to withhold this information was to protect pre-order sales. I and I suspect many others, waited until system requirements were released before pre-ordering the game. The appropriate time time for this information to be released would have been when the system requirements were released. I know of many people who would have not pre-ordered the game just because it uses Denuvo or requires yet another account to be created. Even after release, the official Bethesda support site article on system requirements does not mention the need for a Bethesda Account (found at https://help.bethesda.net/app/answers/detail/a_id/41842/~/what-are-the-system-requirements-for-rage-2-on-pc%3F ). B: As for Denuvo, it is well within reason for a company to want to protect their product from piracy. I do not begrudge the Publisher for including 3rd party DRM. Instead I begrudge them for withholding information on it until 24 hours prior to the games release. C: As for reviewing the game itself, so far I have found it fun and enjoyable. I am only recommending that you not buy this product due to the way the publisher withheld important information about the product almost to the last minute. It is my opinion that this corporate behavior should not be rewarded by giving a review that is encouraging others to buy the product.. Can't recommend this game at full price, at the very least wait for a sale. A 60 dollar game with a 10 hour story is just not okay with me, and I know there's many side missions and♥♥♥♥♥♥but they're not fun because after doing the same side missions for many hours they become repetitive. Story is extremely boring, the characters are also boring, The only fun part about the game is the gameplay, abilities are fun and there's lots of upgrading you can do to make those abilities funner. That's it, the rest of the game is lackluster. Not really sure what the devs were thinking here, perhaps to just make a huge sandbox type of game with lots to do and call it a day. Was expecting a decent story with not so repetitive missions which is what we got in Rage 2. This game is a 5/10 at most.. Wait for a sale. RAGE 2's on-foot combat is really solid and fun once you have all of the abilities and weapons, but I'm hard pressed to say that makes up for the rest of it being really average. It's a well made, but very unambitious game. It's ironic they rip on the original game in the marketing, given this game falls into the same holes. Admittedly, larger, more open holes. RAGE 2's main story is insultingly low effort, and phoned in. There's nothing to spoil; the antagonist destroys your home, you track him down and kill him. That's literally, literally it. And it lasts maybe a couple of hours. It's far, far less eventful than the original game, just with a whole load more open world padding to fill out the run time. There's very little new here, either. You meet the same characters, the same factions, and fight the same enemy. It made me angry when the credits rolled, I had the exact same feeling of "really, that's it?" from the first game. Nothing of interest happens. The entire game. No character development, no plot twists, no exploration of any of the factions.RAGE 2's open world is markedly smaller than other recent titles, and yet still as empty. As you traverse around you'll see pins pop up on your map for random errands, busy work to earn you notches on meters that slowly build up to a level increase or something you really just don't care about. Unlike a game like Fallout, you won't find any interesting stories in locations either. You might find a data pad with a recent entry from some raider or scout, but never anything deeper. Nothing is going on in this world. It's set dressing, nothing more.Avalanche must've brought some of their Mad Max experience to this game, as the exterior locations look gorgeous and a lot of the outposts have a nice lived-in feel. Sadly, the interiors are poor. Especially the Authority locations, which make zero effort to feel like tangible places. Everything is a corridor, or an empty open room, or a boss arena. If I didn't know better, I would've guessed a procedural system spat these levels out. Oh, and it does that thing. You go back to your hometown after what feels like weeks, and everything is still on fire. Your friend talks to you like it's been five minutes. It makes it painfully clear the world is static, and unreactive. There's a disappointingly small pool of vehicles to choose from, especially compared to Mad Max, another Avalanche title. And very little vehicle combat; unlike the aforementioned title, enemy vehicles will often drive past without firing. Admittedly, the convoy's are good fun here. They made up for the lack of the harpoon with multi-stage vehicles, which is a fun addition. The only vehicle you'll use is the default one, because it's the only one with decent weapons, and the only one that can be upgraded. That and the Icarus, because it makes getting around much less of a chore.RAGE 2 has a GOOD shotgun, which instantly gives it points in my book. It's all I used, the other weapons were fun distractions but just not practical. I was clearing rooms with the shotgun, instead of fiddling around with alt-fire modes that did less damage than a good accurate buckshot to the face. The abilities are good, too, giving you a lot of motion and options. RAGE 2's on-foot combat in general is just brilliant. I was playing on Hard, and I never took cover. The abilities and overdrive keep you pushing, and killing, and it's gloriously fun. There's enough here to keep you entertained if you're just in it for the on-foot combat, and are planning to play it in bursts rather than over one long session. It just feels like there was very little substance here.I feel a bit bad giving this one a negative review, given I did enjoy it. I just can't recommend it. There's nothing here apart from the gunplay to recommend, and for a full priced AAA game from a legendary developer and publisher that's pretty poor effort.Pick it up cheap, blast the main missions, ignore the side content and treasure hunts. Just go all-in on combat, and you'll have a lot of fun.. Combat is really good, but the world is so empty and bland feeling...there's literally nothing to this game. I tried to convince myself otherwise as I really do enjoy the combat, but when that's all there is and there's SO MUCH empty 'exploration' in-between enemy encounters...what is the point?I get that some people will really dig it and I understand. But in my case it just didn't stack up and I really wish it had. I don't know if Avalanche can do better, but I know that ID can. Bethesda? Well they just suck these days.. It's like Mad Max except instead of being Batman when you're not in a vehicle, you're Doomguy. Decent.
